What Happens During Surgery
Understanding the hair transplant procedure can help you feel confident and well-prepared going into your surgery. Below is a detailed clinical overview of what takes place when we perform hair transplant surgery using both FUE and FUT techniques.
FUE Hair Transplant: Step-by-Step Surgical Process
- Anaesthesia: Local anaesthetic is administered to both the donor and recipient areas of the scalp. You will be awake throughout the entire procedure but will experience no pain. Pain relief is available if needed at any stage.
- Donor Area Preparation: The scalp donor area, typically the occipital and parietal scalp (back and sides), is trimmed to allow precise follicle extraction by the surgical team.
- Follicular Unit Extraction: Using a specialised micropunch tool (typically 0.8mm to 1.0mm in diameter), individual follicular units are extracted one by one from the donor area. Each follicular unit contains between 1 and 5 hair follicles. The extraction pattern is carefully distributed to avoid any visible depletion of the donor area.
- Graft Preservation: Extracted hair grafts are immediately placed into a chilled saline solution to maintain viability outside the body during the procedure.
- Recipient Site Creation: Using micro-blades or needles, Dr. Saifi creates recipient channels in the thinning areas. The angle, direction, and density of these incisions are meticulously planned to replicate natural hair growth patterns and ensure natural-looking results.
- Graft Implantation: Each follicular unit is implanted individually into the prepared channels. Single-follicle grafts are placed at the hairline for a natural, gradual transition, while denser multi-follicle hair grafts fill the central and crown areas.
- Post Operative Care: Once implantation is complete, both the donor and recipient sites are cleaned and dressed. You will receive detailed written aftercare instructions before leaving the hair transplant clinic.
FUT Hair Transplant: Step-by-Step Surgical Process
- Anaesthesia: Local anaesthetic is administered to the donor and recipient areas. The entire procedure is performed under local anaesthesia with the hair transplant patient awake and comfortable throughout.
- Strip Excision: A narrow strip of hair-bearing scalp, typically 1 to 1.5cm in width, is surgically excised from the mid-occipital scalp donor area. The wound is closed using trichophytic closure techniques, which allow hair to grow through the scar line and minimise its visibility.
- Microscopic Dissection: The excised strip is passed to the surgical team who, working under high-magnification stereomicroscopes, carefully dissect the tissue into individual follicular units, preserving each hair graft with minimal trauma.
- Recipient Site Creation: Micro-incisions are made in the thinning areas using custom-sized blades, with precise attention to the natural angulation and orientation of the surrounding hair to ensure natural-looking results.
- Graft Implantation: Follicular units are implanted into the recipient sites. FUT allows a higher graft yield per session, making it particularly advantageous for hair transplant patients with more extensive hair loss or a higher graft count requirement.
- Post Operative Care: Sutures at the donor site are removed at approximately 10 to 14 days. Aftercare instructions covering wound care, sleeping position, and activity restrictions are provided before discharge, and follow-up appointments are arranged as part of your ongoing care.

Patient stories after their FUE hair transplant
What is FUE hair transplantation?
FUE, or follicular unit extraction, is a hair transplant procedure where individual hair follicles are extracted from the back and sides of the head (also referred to as the donor area) and transplanted to areas where you experience hair loss.
FUE method is particularly popular as it causes only minimal scarring and has natural looking results. For more detailed information, visit our guide to FUE hair transplant procedures.
What are the expected results of a FUE hair transplant?
The results of a hair transplant will depend on factors like the chosen method and the number of grafts planted, as well as unique characteristics of every patient. Generally, you can expect natural hair growth and visible final results after 12 months.

What’s the best hair transplant for me?
For every onboarded patient, our hair transplant surgeon Dr. Saifi will recommend the best hair transplant method for your unique needs. He’s well practiced in performing the minimally invasive FUE method for people struggling with hair loss and bald areas.
